Snacking While Shopping Tips
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – Holiday shopping means you’ll be heading to the mall.
The place where there are lots of “samples” of food to try.
Long lines and shopping may make you hungry.
The food court alone can be a place where it’s hard to find a healthy lunch. Pat Baird has some tips on watching your weight when you shop.
Never shop hungry!!!
Eat a meal or small snack before you leave
Pack some sensible items to take along like cereal/energy bars
Pop LF microwave popcorn to munch on in the car, dried fruits and satisfy a sweet tooth; whole fruits are always a dependable standby
Bring along your own muffins and mini muffins: 60 calories vs. 430 at Starbuck’s
Yes! You can have pizza.
Pizza is actually quite healthy
It’s the topping and the amount that is a disaster
Have spinach, broccoli or mushroom instead of sausage, or pepperoni
Enjoy ONE slice + salad rather than 2 or 3 slices
Beware of Beverages!
Some – like shakes, gourmet coffees and smoothies – are loaded with fat and sugar; often as high as 700 calories
Double/triple shakes have almost 900 calories!
Water is a perfect choice, and flavored-waters are even more appealing
Sports drinks for athletic sports…NOT for the sport of shopping (too much sugar and electrolytes for non athletes)
Make These Fast Food Choices:
McDonald’s = side salads + LF dressing = 100 cals, small burger = 250 cals, yogurt parfait = 130 cals; snack wrap = 260
Wendy’s = chili = 190 cals, Jr. shake = 150 cals
BK = grilled chicken salad
