Man found unresponsive in vehicle after crash

LEDYARD, Conn. (WTNH) — An elderly man has died after he was found inside a car that went off the road along Route 214 in Ledyard.

According to police, it happened Friday night shortly before 11 p.m. on Iron Street, between Spicer Hill and Lee Brook Roads.

Emergency responders say the 2009 Chevy Malibu went off the road and the driver was found unresponsive. He’s been identified as John McGrenery, 77, of Monroe. McGrenery was taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich where he was pronounced dead. The passenger in the car, 77 year old Trudy McGrenery, was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Police are now trying to determine what caused the accident, including the possibility the driver suffered a medical issue prior to the car going off the road.
