NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH)–22-year-old Janell Campbell is locked in a cell at the New Britain police department awaiting arraignment on charges that she killed a 3 week old baby. Police say it happened on December 5th. Campbell’s cousin Randy says it happened in a house on Winter Street.
Randy says his cousin has a son of her own, a toddler, and they were all together on the night the baby died with a friend.
“I guess it was her friend’s [baby], it was like her best friend, but she wouldn’t do something like this. Everybody was sleeping, baby was asleep, she was asleep, her son was asleep,”
Police say because the victim is a juvenile they cannot confirm the relationship between Campbell and the 3 week old baby. Cpt. Thomas Steck of the New Britain PD says the investigation started when the baby was taken to the hospital for some mysterious injuries.
“We were called and alerted but the hospital staff they had deemed that thin injuries appeared suspicious to them, we responded and started an investigation.”
Because the warrant is sealed there is a lot police can’t release like the exact nature of the injuries, or whether or not there will be more arrests. But Cpt Steck says this is still an ongoing investigation.
“Investigators from our youth services responded to the winter street home where they took her into custody on the strength of the warrant and she is being held here in new Britain on a quarter million dollars bond.”
Police expect Campbell to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
