Person struck by train in Meriden

MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A person was struck by a freight train in Meriden late Monday morning.

The strike occurred near Cooper Street close to Perkins Square. News 8 spoke with officers on the scene and learned that the person struck had laid down on the tracks. The person’s legs were crushed by the train, according to police.

A LifeStar emergency medical helicopter arrived on the scene to airlift the person to the hospital. The identity and condition of the victim has not yet been released.

Amtrak commuter train #493 was blocked by the accident. Passengers were switched to another train to continue on to their destinations.

Officers are still on the scene conducting their investigation. News 8 will update this story with new details as they become available.
