Route 12 in Killingly reopened after gas leak

KILLINGLY, Conn. (WTNH) — Police closed Route 12 near Morin Avenue and evacuated residents due to a gas leak in the area late Monday morning.

State police tell News 8 that a construction crew operating a backhoe accidentally hit a gas main in front of 524 Main Street. Police evacuated everyone between Morin Avenue and North Street, roughly one quarter of a mile near the accident location.

There were no injuries in the incident, and the evacuations were a precautionary measure. The gas leak was secured by crews at Yankee Gas around 2:00 p.m.

After the area was declared safe by officials, police allowed residents to return to their homes.
