MADISON, Conn. (WTNH)– Some Italian-Americans may know the celebration which centers around La Befana, at Christmastime in Italy, a Grandmother delivers gifts to children. Kate West of Madison celebrated that tradition as a child here, and has written a children’s book around that character.
Now West is developing a television show too. In her show, La Befana is a puppet. It centers around tradition, food, and culture.
“La Befana and The Star is a book based on our lovely La Befana,” said West. “La Befana is actually someone very special to me because I grew up with her. I grew up in an Italian-American family and each year at Christmastime we celebrated Santa like all the other families did, and then we had another tradition we celebrated. We celebrated La Befana, and so it’s always been my dream to share her with children all over the world, so I wrote this book.”
“We’re going to be hosting guests from other cultures who will come on the show and teach something special from their tradition or their culture, and you’re going to includes chefs and public people.”
Two more books are in the works; they’re illustrated by West’s dad.
The hope is that the show will find its way to PBS or network television. Famed chef, Connecticut’s Jacques Pepin, is featured in their pilot.
