Bridgeport man killed in Route 8 stabbing

State Police Major Crimes Squad detectives on the scene of a fatal stabbing on the Exit 5 ramp of Route 8 in Bridgeport (WTNH)

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH)– State police say 26-year-old Bryant Kelly of Bridgeport died after being stabbed during an argument on the side of an exit ramp.

Police say just after 11 p.m. Thursday night, two drivers pulled over on exit 5 off Route 8 and started fighting. A driver passing by saw the struggle and called 911.

“We immediately dispatched troopers and shortly there after we received another 911 call from one of the participants in the confrontation,” said Lt. J. Paul Vance.

That man, who police are not identifying, told police he needed help and he was removing himself from the scene for safety reasons. He came to Lindley Street and Capital Avenue, and waited for troopers.

Police say when they got to the off-ramp, they found Kelly outside of his car with stab wounds to the chest. He died at the hospital.

“There was a lot of cop cars driving down Lindley toward the hospital,” said Omar Habbab, who was at a nearby gas station.

He said a nurse came in to the gas station and told him what happened.

“[She said] she worked at the hospital at the emergency room and she told me someone got stabbed, someone died,” said Habbab. “There’s a lot of people at the hospital, cops are going crazy over there.”

“There was a confrontation over something,” said Lt. Vance. “Witnesses will certainly help us piece that information together.”

Police say they have recovered a weapon. They’re not saying how the argument started. They’re looking into whether or not this was road rage, and whether or not the two even knew each other.

“Both individuals they’re involved in a confrontation,” said Lt. Vance. “We’re trying to see if there is any past relationship or any knowledge of each other.”

State Police are asking anyone who may have driven pass this scene, or observed anything just prior to or during this altercation to contact State Police at 203 696-2500. All calls received will be kept in strict confidence.
