MYSTIC, Conn. (WTNH)– A Mystic man made an anonymous donation to help a local veteran.
Work Vessels for Veterans presented a Dodge Durango to Rhode Island Air National Guard Technical Sergeant Stephen D’Amico. He picked it up at the Valenti Auto group in Mystic, which made sure the 2001 truck was in good condition.
D’Amico, who served 18 years with several overseas active deployments and was injured on duty, is a recent graduate of UConn’s “Entrepreneurial Bootcamp for Disabled Veterans.” He will use the vehicle for his new enterprise, Broken Gear Wear, a clothing line of adaptive wear for disabled athletes.
“I feel so honored because when I see this vehicle, this is kind of what a broken gear vehicle would be,” said D’Amico. “It’s rugged, it’s tough, it’s kind of beat up a little bit, but that’s what we’re looking for. You’ve been through the ringer, but that’s okay, you still press on.”
All Work Vessels for Veterans asks of D’Amico is that he pay it forward. If he needs to hire someone, the organization hopes he’ll consider a veteran for the job.
