Authorities say Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who vowed online to shoot two "pigs" in retaliation for the police chokehold death of Eric Garner, ambushed Ramos in Liu in a patrol car Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, and fatally shot them in broad daylight before running to a subway station and killing himself. (WTNH)– The New York Yankees will reportedly pay the education costs for the children of the NYPD officer who was shot and killed with his partner while on duty Saturday.

Officers Rafael Ramos, 40, and Wenjian Liu, 32, were ambushed by 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who shot both officers in the head while they were sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn. Brinsley later committed suicide in a subway station.

The Daily News reports that Yankee owner, George Steinbrenner’s Yankee Silver Shield Foundation provides education costs for children of New York City police officers, firefighters and Port Authority employees who were killed in the line of duty. Steinbrenner, who died in 2010, started the foundation in 1982. He friend and former Olympian Jim Fuchs ran the foundation until his death, also in 2010. Fuch’s daughter Casey now runs the foundation, which has since paid the education costs for thousands.

Ramos has a 13-year-old son, Jaden, and another son in college. Liu was recently married and had no children.
