NEW LONDON/WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTNH)–In the wake of all of the protests and violence that have been sparked nationwide, the acting New London police chief is asking for permission from the city to buy riot gear. Chief Peter Richard says he doesn’t want to take any chances and wants to be prepared for a worst-case scenario.
He’s asking for $28,000 to buy helmets, plastic shields and gas masks.
Richard had previously asked for nearly $9,000 to replace 15 bullet proof vets. Many local cops are in disbelief over what happened in New York.
Officers in Willimantic are both saddened by the shooting in New York but also put on alert because of it. News 8 was told that because the attack was an ambush, they really can’t train for it, but they can certainly be even more aware of the dangers they face each day.
Whether it’s what happened in New York or the ambush of two troopers behind a barracks in Pennsylvania, safety is certainly something on the minds of officers.
And at this time of year their hearts go out to the family members now facing a tragic loss.
“It’s in our minds and it’s also in our hearts and again we understand that this is a difficult job that we put ourselves in harms way every day but to get ambushed it’s just an absolute tragic event by cowardice people that are attacking the police,” said Stanley Parizo of Willimantic police.
