New London man wins $1 million in Powerball

Lottery winner William Acosta claimed his $1 million prize in Rocky Hill.

NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH)–A New London man will have $1 million extra to spend this Christmas after winning the Powerball. William Acosta beat 5 million-to-1 odds to win the money after landing all five of the “Match 5” numbers on December 20.

Acosta bought the winning ticket at Montauk Avenue Liquor Store in New London.

“I checked the lottery’s website and I thought I had only three numbers,” Acosta said. “When I clicked the ‘Payout’ button and saw that I won $1 million, I let out a big yell, put on my shoes and went straight to a retailer to scan my ticket.”

Acosta said that he would like to buy his mother a new car, put some money in the bank and “maybe buy a small house,” with the newfound money.

As the selling retailer, Montauk Avenue Liquor Store will receive $2,500 from the CT Lottery.

Since the new Powerball game began on January 15, 2012, Connecticut has sold 21 prize winning tickets worth $1,000,000, plus another 7 tickets that were “Power Played” for the game’s $2,000,000 prize.
