“It’s really fun because you create something,” says Merwin.
The 71 year old grandmother picked up this wood carving hobby and a chainsaw for the first time when she retired two years ago. She wanted to carve bears.
“I’ve always enjoyed seeing them when we went to Vermont, Alaska, and all that. So I just thought I’d try my hand at it,” says Merwin.
Now her nativity scene is getting a lot of attention and admiration. She has Mary, Joseph, Jesus, three wise men, two angels and three sheep. Merwin adds, “And one of the sheep is black because every family has to have a black sheep.”
Most of her creations start out with a three foot log and a sketch and then the chainsaw takes over. She now has three.
“I work out at the gym every day. You really have to be strong,” says Merwin.
“They kind of accept me for my novelty, I’m not the typical grandmother,” says Merwin who plans to carve a figure for each holiday throughout the year.
Her latest creation and work in progress is a rabbit for Easter.
