NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH)– Santa came a little early for one New London man. He just hit a $1 million Powerball jackpot.
William Acosta is now $1 million richer.
“I know him very well, he’s my regular customer,” said an owner of the store that sold the winning ticket.
The owners of the Montauk Avenue Liquor Store say Acosta bought just one quick pick for Saturday’s Powerball drawing. That’s all he needed.
“We always tease our customers, ‘you know, we sell nothing but the winners here,'” said Jalpa Patel. “We proved it right today.”
There may be some truth to that. Before her family owned this store, Patel says there were a couple of other millionaires made here.
“Congratulations,” said Ken Yachta. “I’m going to get the next million out of this store.”
Acosta beat the odds of matching five of the six numbers, which are one in more than five-million.
“When I clicked the Payout button and saw I won $1,000,000, I let out a big yell, put on my shoes, and went straight to a retailer to scan my ticket,” Acosta told lottery officials.
“Whoever won it, this is the right time of year, so congratulations to them,” said Kanika Richardson.
“Do you think this is a lucky store?” we asked.
“Yeah, this has always been a lucky store,” said Richardson.
The store owners are also lucky; they’ll get a $2,500 bonus check.
“You know, holiday times absolutely every little penny helps,” said Patel.
And the store gets a winning reputation.
“Trust me, they’ll be here,” said Yachta. “They’ll be standing outside the front door. ‘I want to get a ticket ,I want a ticket.'”
Since it was customers who told the Patels they sold the winning lottery ticket, they apparently haven’t gotten their check just yet.
