WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTNH)– Police in Willimantic have confirmed that back-to-back armed robberies have taken place in the city.
The first robbery occurred around 8:00 p.m. at the Sam’s convenience store and gas station at 217 Main Street. Police said that a lone male entered the store displaying a weapon. After securing an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect then fled on foot. The store clerk was not injured in the robbery.
Officers said they have a limited description of the robber. All they have is that he was a male suspect wearing dark clothing and a hooded sweatshirt.
While police were at the scene of the Sam’s store robbery, a second armed robbery was reported at 8:13 p.m. from the A-1 gas station, located across town at 1605 West Main Street.
Police said three men dressed in dark clothing entered the store displaying a weapon. Just like the other robbery, they secured an undisclosed amount of cash, and then fled from the scene on foot.
The clerk at the A-1 store was not injured in the robbery. Officers said no further description of the three suspects is available.
Two separate police canine teams were brought in along with Willimantic detectives. Officials said these robberies are being investigated separately, and they believe the timing is coincidental.
