Tires slashed; cars in New London targeted in vandalism spree

NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH)–A vandalism spree hit the shoreline this weekend, and dozens of cars in New London were targeted.

Sergio Manzano is one of the many victims of these vandals who targeted parked cars on several downtown New London streets. There were six hit on Home Street alone.

“Everybody got the same thing everybody got the knife two punctures,” he said. “From the end of the street all the way to the fire hydrant.” In total, police say 35 tires were slashed sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Manzano’s rear tire also appears to have been slashed but it wasn’t completely penetrated. He’s hoping that tire is safe enough to keep.

“On this car every tire is $170 because they’re special tires. So yeah it does affect me,” he said.

And with a $500 deductible, he’s even more affected because he has to pay out of pocket to replace a tire. This type of sidewall damage cannot be repaired.

“It makes me kind of sad to know that it’s not funny. A lot of people got damaged. A lot of people need better things than replacing tires.”

Police are hoping anyone who saw suspicious activity reports it. All calls will remain anonymous.

“I hope it doesn’t happen again and I hope they catch somebody,” Manzano said.
