HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Secretary of the State Denise Merrill says she’s received the official resignations of two Bridgeport lawmakers, triggering the process for mid-legislative session special elections.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy recently appointed state Sen. Andres Ayala as his new Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and state Rep. Auden Grogins as a Superior Court judge. Both Democrats had won re-election in November but will not be sworn into office on Wednesday, opening day of the General Assembly.
Merrill said Malloy has until Jan. 17 to issue Writs of Special Election, setting dates for special elections to choose the lawmakers’ successors.
The elections must be held in each district 46 days after the writs are issued.
While Grogins’ House district includes only Bridgeport, Ayala’s Senate district includes both Bridgeport and Stratford.
