(WTNH)– If you noticed a bunch of adorable dogs in your news-feed, you’re not the only one. It’s because the Facebook event “Photo Doggies for Anthony” has gone viral to cheer up an Arizona teen undergoing chemo.

Sixteen-year-old Anthony Lyons is undergoing chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia at Phoenix’s Children’s Hospital. The event explained that while some days Anthony gets visits from dogs, other days he doesn’t, so his family decided to create the page so the photos of the dogs would make him smile.

Photo Doggies for Anthony was created by family friend Roberta Lucero-Koron in December because when it comes to dogs she says ” they make him smile. I thought if I create this event, you can post a picture of your dog to help make him smile. His mom shows them to him and he smiles.”

Word spread from just family and friends and by the end of the month, people all over the world were submitting dog photos after the event went viral on Facebook.

The page not only featured adorable photos of dogs (and the occasional kitty) with inspiring messages and well wishes for Anthony, but also gave updates on Anthony’s health.

Anthony has been in and out of the hospital but on Friday, January 4th, he was back in the hospital to start another week of chemotherapy. That same day Lucero-Koron posted “He needs your photos and prayers.”  When another half million photos were then shared by Sunday, Lucero-Koron  responded “Anthony is smiling joyfully because of YOU. … One thing I have to say is, make yourself smile too by looking at these beautiful animals that God gave us. I can’t stop crying from tears of happiness.”

As of Tuesday morning, the original event was reportedly taken down from Facebook. Anthony created another event also under Photo Doggies for Anthony. On the new page he wrote  “Not actual event, original photo doggies for anthony got taken down because one person decided to bring his negativity upon a great thing, i hope i can continue to see all the pictures of your dogs. No matter what they make me happy and i try and look at every single one of them!”
