1 dead after car crashes into river

BARKHAMSTED, Conn. (WTNH) — One person is dead after their car left West River Road in Barkhamsted and went into the Farmington River.

Just before 1:15 p.m., police responded to 448 West River Road on a report of a car in the water. Initial reports stated that although the river was shallow, extrication equipment was needed to rescue the driver, 46-year-old Kenneth Gibb. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

State police say Gibb hit wire rope guardrails and trees before going down an embankment and into the river. They say the entire car was extensively damaged.

State police are continuing their investigation. If you witnessed this accident, or if you have any information that could help officers with their investigation, you’re asked to call State Police at 860-626-7900.
