MADISON, Conn. (WTNH)– A teacher at Daniel Hand High School is being investigated for having a sexual relationship with a student.
“I’ve never had her as a teacher, but she used to work in the gym,” said one student. “From other kids in school I’ve heard that she’s a really nice teacher and really fun teacher.”
The teacher has been placed on administrative leave while administrators investigate the claim. Sources tell News 8 that the student is an athlete at Daniel Hand High School. The superintendent says the student reported the allegation to the school resource officer earlier Wednesday.
“At this point we’re speaking to victims and the potential suspect, but at this point that is the extent of the investigation,” said Madison police Sergeant Joseph Race.
Police say the incident may have occurred within the past few weeks. News 8 spoke with Madison police, who explained the delicate nature of this case, and why they aren’t releasing many details at this time.
“Potential victim is a juvenile,” said Sgt. Race. “That’s why as far as details there’s not much more to say at this time.”
Parents say they find the fact that police and the Department of Children and Families are investigating comforting, but hope swift action is taken.
“As a parent you’re just always hoping that, that the lessons are you have to teach your kids to protect yourself, and no matter who and when and what color, whatever it may be, you’ve just got to teach your kids properly,” said parent Steven Pearlman.
However, not all students take comfort.
“I mean personally I think it’s completely ridiculous that teacher does that with a student,” said Nicholas Panico, a junior at Daniel Hand High School. “A teacher’s job is to educate so students can learn; and to have that relationship with a student is completely inappropriate.”
News 8 has the name of the teacher but will not release it until police make an arrest.
