Fire at South Carolina park kills 27 animals; 14 survive

INMAN, S.C. (AP) — Officials at Hollywild Animal Park say 27 animals have been killed in a fire.

Area media outlets report officials say the fire broke out overnight Friday. Fire Chief Brent Blackwell, of the Holly Springs Fire Department said an electrical short in one of the florescent overhead lights that caught part of the barn on fire.

Hollywild spokeswoman Kim Atchley said the animals died from smoke inhalation. Among the dead were four chimpanzees, two baboons, a bear cub, four wolf hybrid puppies and a barn cat.

Atchley said the animals were in the barn to protect them from the extremely cold temperatures, adding that park employees plan a weekend memorial service.
