NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– New Haven police say a man with a knife lunged at an officer when they were called to a domestic dispute Thursday night.

Police say 43-year-old Timothy Hampton Sr., and his son, 23-year-old Timothy Hampton Jr. were fighting on White Street when they arrived. They say Hampton Sr. had a spring-loaded knife. According to police, officers ordered him to drop the knife, but he didn’t; instead he lunged at an officer with the knife. Police say they had to pepper spray Hampton Sr., but it had little effect.

Officers say they eventually pried the knife out of the suspect’s hand.

Hampton Sr. is charged with second-degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct.
