Delayed Delta flight takes off with only 2 passengers

(WTNH)– After hours of delays, a Delta Air Lines flight took off with only two passengers on board Monday.

The first passenger, Chris O’Leary, of Brooklyn, gained national attention when he tweeted the event and posted pictures of himself aboard the 76-seater commercial plane.

ABC News reports that O’Leary was originally scheduled for a 7:15 a.m. flight out of Cleveland but when that flight got cancelled, he was re-booked on that flight, scheduled to take off at 9:39 a.m. Other passengers found out about the delay at the airport and were rebooked on earlier flights. However, O’Leary tracked the flight from his phone so he stayed at his hotel across the street until shortly before his flight was to take off.

When he arrived at the airport, he was told the airline had been paging his name over the loudspeaker and that everyone else had been rebooked on another flight. “Part of this is my own stupidity but it ended up working out in my favor,” he told ABC News.

Just like any other flight, there was of course a safety briefing.

While O’Leary almost had the flight to himself, the plane eventually went back to the gate to pick up one more passenger.

However they didn’t end up sharing the excitement. O’Leary told ABC News “he took advantage of the fact the flight was empty and reclined his seat all the way (and slept).”

Delta Air Lines has confirmed that there were only two passengers on board that plane.

“It was definitely the most memorable flight I’ve been on in recent memory if only for the sheer lack of passengers to become bothersome,” said O’Leary.

His story went viral and O”Leary has since made some media appearances all thanks to his delayed flight.
