“Birdman,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” lead in Oscar nominations

(WTNH)– This year’s Oscar nominations were announced Thursday morning.

In the lead with the most nominations are “Birdman” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” with 9 nominations each, including best picture and best director.

“Birdman’s” Michael Keaton is also up for best actor.

Not far behind is “The Imitation Game” with 8 nominations, which also include best picture and a best actor nod for star Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as a supporting actress nod for Keira Knightley.

Best picture favorite “Boyhood,” who won the Golden Globe for best picture, landed 6 nominations including best picture.

Connecticut resident Meryl Streep received her 19th nomination for “Into the Woods.”

Actors Chris Pine, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and directors Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams announced the nomination around 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning, which was 5:30 a.m. Hollywood time.

Breaking tradition, this year The Academy announced all 24 categories instead of just the top categories at the news conference.

The 87th annual Academy Awards presented at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center will air live on ABC on Sunday, February 22nd at 7 p.m. Neil Patrick Harris will host.
