Firefighter union president: Promotional test inaccurate, outdated

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– There’s new tension between New Haven firefighters and the city, this time over the promotional exam.

The union says the current test is inaccurate and outdated. They haven’t had a promotional exam, the test to be able to climb the ranks, in 12 years. The union issued an injunction Friday.

Union President Lt. James Kottage says he doesn’t want to delay the test, and he wants his colleagues to get promotions. However, he says when it comes to the section on Standard Operating Procedures, it’s all out of date.

“We want to correct the SOPs,” said Kottage. “There is bad information that the officers are going to need to study for promotions, and it’s just not right.”

This all comes as the city cut several unfilled positions in the department just about a week ago.

The promotional exam is scheduled for the end of the month.
