HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Hamden firefighters spent part of Saturday evening battling flames on Haig Street near Dixwell Avenue.

Officials say the fire broke out at a vacant building at 1685 Haig Street around 5 p.m. They say boxes and paper burned; however, the building suffered no structural damage. According to fire officials, the flames were fully extinguished by 6:30 p.m.

The fire chief says people escaping the cold could have started the blaze, but that is not confirmed. The fire marshal is investigating the official cause of the fire.
