(WPRI) — While officials are urging that all non-essential persons stay off the road, if you are going to drive there are some important things you should have in your car.

“Always plan for the worst and hope for the best,” John Paul of AAA said.

According to AAA, if you get trapped in your car, having these essentials could mean the difference between life and death.

Some of the most important items that could help you out in a storm are jumper cables, a reflective vest, blankets, and a folding shovel.

The shovel is especially important because in the event that you need to stay in you car, snow that builds up around your exhaust pipe could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

“Clear all of the snow away from your exhaust pipe so it doesn’t come back into your car,” he said.

Another important tip — in the event that you do get stuck in the snow, make sure to raise your hood and turn on the dome light so officials can find you.
