Police: Liquor store shoplifting ends with pursuit

WESTPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — Shoplifting at a Westport liquor store ended in a police pursuit Friday afternoon, according to officials.

Westport police say 31-year-old Jamie Corso of Niantic went in to Castle Wine & Spirits and hid liquor in a bag while a man distracted employees. They say employees gave police a description of the suspects and their vehicle, leading to police finding them in the parking lot of another liquor store.

Police say they tried to stop the suspects’ vehicle, but 43-year-old Mario Varriale of Branford engaged them in pursuit. The pursuit ended on I-95 in Bridgeport, and Corso, Varriale, and 30-year-old Richard Smith of New Haven were arrested, according to police.

All three suspects are charged with sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. Varriale is also charged with engaging police in pursuit. Each suspect’s bond was set at $7,500 and all are scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court Feb. 13.
