Driver Dies After Driving Down Highway in Wrong Direction

BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – A woman has died after police say she was driving down Interstate 95 in the wrong direction, hitting several other cars while driving.

It happened just before 1 o’clock in the morning on Sunday, near the southbound near the rest area.

Police say Mary E. Chiapulis of Massachusetts hit three cars while driving in the wrong direction on I-95.  Police say she first hit the left side of a vehicle, then hit a second vehicle head on which caused her to spin towards a third vehicle which she also hit.

All the people in the first two cars were taken to Yale New Haven Hospital.  We are told they have non-life threatening injuries.

Chiapulis was also taken to Yale New Haven Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police say her airbag did not deploy but she was wearing a seat-belt.

The accident is currently under investigation.
