Huge Jackpot, Big Dreams, Long Odds, Winning Numbers

(WTNH) — When you dream of winning the lottery, do put a number on the jackpot? Because there’s an awfully big number up for grabs Wednesday night that could make a lot of dreams come true.

The estimated Powerball jackpot for Wednesay’s drawing has grown to $500 million dollars. If the figure stays right there, it would be the third-largest jackpot in Powerball history and the fifth-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history. The cash value of the jackpot is $337.8 million.

The drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. In Connecticut, tickets were on sale until 9:50 p.m.. We used to see people lining up to buy those tickets in Connecticut towns that share a border with New York and Massachusetts. But those two states made the game available in 2010, making it unnecessary for people to cross the border to buy tickets. However, a store manager says they were still busy.

“Very busy night, I mean I’m selling a lot of Powerballs,” said Hamza Manzar. “The store’s been doing busy as well so I’m doing good.”

As they say, you can’t win if you don’t play. But, and here comes the Debbie Downer part of this article: even if you do play, your odds of winning the jackpot aren’t very good, just one in 175,000,000.

Two math professors from Emory University, Aaron Abrams and Skip Garibaldi, wrote about the odds in 2010. They say buying lottery tickets is basically a bad investment. But you knew that.

The long odds don’t keep people from playing, and they have their plans for what they’d do with all that money.

“First thing I would do is I would get in line and look for a house on and island, no question,” said Maura Tancredi of Milford. “I would also buy a snow plow, no question.”

“Paying off school debt right away, and buying a nice ’72 Pontiac GTO probably,” said Milford’s Matthew Weichner.

Mathematically, there’s a better chance you’ll be killed in a plane crash (one in 8,000) or by being hit by lightning (one in 136,000) than those plans becoming reality. You’re also more likely to be hit an asteroid (one in 700,000) or attacked be by a shark (one in 12 million) than to have those dreams come true.

But sometimes dreams do come true. Eventually someone has to win and it could be you. Wednesday’s winning numbers are 11, 13, 25, 39, 54, 19.
