Gas leak causes evacuations in Torrington

TORRINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Emergency responders have evacuated homes and shut down a section of Torrington after a gas leak was reported Tuesday afternoon.

Around 3:10 p.m., police responded to the area of the East Main Street near the Exit 44 off-ramp from Route 8. Police tell News 8 the leak is located between Wall Street and Route 8. Gas company crews are on the scene now working to repair the leak.

The exit 44 off-ramp was closed for about 45 minutes, but firefighters have since told News 8 that the ramps are back open.

Officials say about a dozen people have been evacuated as a precaution. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the leak has not yet been determined.
