Fuel truck rollover causes major delays on I-95

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– There were major delays on I-95 southbound this morning due to accidents in West Haven and New Haven, including a fuel truck rollover.

The I-95 Southbound Exit 45 off ramp in New Haven was closed due to a tanker truck accident on Route 10.  Route 10 in both directions was closed at I-95 because of the overturned tractor trailer.

Police say it was determined that the crash occurred when the driver of a car exited I-95 south and cut across the Boulevard in an attempt to get back on the highway at the on-ramp. The driver of an “Apple Oil” fuel tanker truck swerved to avoid  the car and in doing so, rolled on to it’s side. No one was injured in the accident.

About 10 gallons of home heating oil, spilled onto the road and none of the fuel made it to a catch-basin or storm drain. Firefighters and a clean up crew from the state DEEP responded to clean up the hazmat situation.

Traffic still remains impacted in the area of Kimberly Avenue and the Ella T. Grasso Boulevard as crews siphon out the truck’s content.

The car’s driver was found at fault for failing to grant the right of way.

The DOT also reported that I-95 Southbound was congested between Exits 51 and 42 because of an accident between Exits 43 and 42. The left lane was closed after a  pick up truck went into a guardrail earlier this morning at exit 43.

RT15 Northbound was also closed earlier today in Greenwich between Exits 29 and 31 because of a multi-vehicle accident.
