CHESHIRE, Conn. (WTNH)– Being out in the cold weather this time of year isn’t easy for any profession that works outdoors.
“Picture yourself inside a freezer tossing garbage,” said Jeff Bess, garbage truck driver for AJ Waste Services in Cheshire.
Many garbage crews start their day in the early morning hours before the sun comes up. At AJ Waste Services several of the crew members have to stand on the back of the trucks for their shifts, which can be anywhere from six to eight hours.
“When we could we jump in the truck and get in front of the heater,” said Pat Summa, a garbage picker for the company.
The company says there are things people can do to make their job a little easier.
“Try to keep your garbage cans accessible,” said Bess. “Don’t put them behind the snow banks or on top of the snow banks.”
Also, make sure the area where you place your garbage barrels for pick-up is not covered in snow or ice, so garbage crews don’t slip and fall.”
