New Haven, CT (WTNH)- At East Shore park in New Haven the rules include no alcohol, no vending and no swimming. No smoking could be added to the list if some city leaders have their way. The board of alders is looking at whether smoking or any use of tobacco should be prohibited on city owned property.
City leaders are trying to promote public health, that means they don’t want you to light up in the park or on school grounds. New Haven resident Deborah Mitchell said, “I think it is very significant that we do not smoke on the school grounds or in the parks and we need to think positively about the reflection and the impact we are making on our youth and I think it’s a very very good move.”
City leader submitted a proposed ordinance now it will face public hearings before it gets the thumbs up or thumbs down. Steven Cartwright said, “If that’s a life choice they want to make for themselves then that is their decision personally I don’t smoke so to me it doesn’t matter. I feel that anyone should be able to do what they want to do with their life.”
John Mao said, “I think it is peoples freedom where they choose to smoke but for public places that’s a different realm.” What people are saying when it comes to smoking on school grounds? Mao added, “I would say no to that school grounds because children should be smelling the fresh air without any smoke.” City leaders say their municipal authority is to promote a healthy environment.
