(WTNH) — For the 29 million Americans who have diabetes, maintaining healthy feet is a must. One of the most common complications from the disease is nerve damage, or neuropathy.
Once the nerves are damaged, there aren’t many effective ways to treat them. Doctors say if you’re a diabetic and having foot pain, do not ignore it.
“The risks of not recognizing or not treating neuropathy is an increase in the risk of foot ulcers, foot infections, which can lead to more serious or life threatening infections, or even amputation of the toes or the feet,” said Dr. Patrick Bowen of Emory Health Care.
Home care is also very important. Doctors say diabetics should check their feet everyday. They also encourage patients to wear well-fitting socks and be careful when going barefoot.
