2 Coast Guard Academy cadets killed in spring break crash

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — The Coast Guard Academy says two cadets killed in a spring break car crash in New Jersey are from the Republic of Georgia.

Spokesman David Santos tells The Day of New London that 1st Class Cadet Soso Makaridze and 3rd Class Cadet Bersarian Gorjoladze died in the crash.

He says they were passengers in a car driven by 21-year-old 1st Class Cadet Joel MacArthur, of Oley, Pennsylvania. MacArthur was injured.

New Jersey authorities say MacArthur’s car collided with an oncoming car on Route 31 in Hopewell Township early Saturday. Two people in the second car were injured.

Santos says counseling will be offered and memorial services planned when students return March 15.

Academy Superintendent Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz says the community is deeply saddened by the deaths.
