Gas station canopy collapses in Wallingford

(WTNH / Report-It / Wallingford Community)

WALLINGFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — All the wet, heavy snow turned out to be too much for a gas station awning in Wallingford Tuesday.

The canopy collapsed at the Sunoco station at the corner of Route 150 and River Road just after 4:15 p.m. Witnesses say the ground shook as the ice-covered awning buckled and fell onto cars below. No one was hurt, but at least one car has significant damage.

“‘Was there anybody?’ And he said yes, and my heart came into my throat,” said owner Rashid Sherwani. “‘Is that person okay?’ Yes, and I said thank God, the rest I can handle.”

The gas station will be closed while the awning is fixed. They aren’t sure yet how long that will take.
