Resources for parents with child safety seats

(WTNH) — An 18-month-old girl survived a car crash in a frigid Utah river after being strapped in a car seat upside-down for 14 hours Sunday before being found by a fisherman. The girl was found hanging upside down above the river that flowed through the car, and the water never reached high enough to touch her. Officers believe that the child survived the crash only because the car seat was properly installed, and the girl was strapped in securely.

For parents, securing a car seat to your vehicle may seem like an easy thing to do. Research conducted by Safe Kids Connecticut, a statewide network of people and organizations who work together to prevent childhood injury, found that only one out of every five car seats is properly installed.

News 8 has assembled the following links to several resources to help parents understand the proper way to fit a car seat in their vehicle. These resources explain why infant car seats must face backwards, when to switch to forward facing seats, the differences between using the car’s seat belt or the LATCH system, and much more.

If you want to rest assured that your child safety seat is installed properly, parents are welcome to make an appointment with Connecticut police departments that have specific training to ensure seats are properly installed. A complete list of car seat fitting stations is available at CTSafeKids.org.
