FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — A fire broke out in the roof of the Gym at Southport Athletic Saturday morning while classes were in session.
Lee Corbo, an off-duty fire lieutenant driving by around 7:30 a.m., saw the flames and helped evacuate the smoky building, preventing anyone from being injured, the Fairfield Fire Department says.
According to officials, when crews arrived minutes later, firefighters reported visible flames shooting from the roof. Firefighters attacked the blaze from the air and ground while additional crews placed protective covers inside the gym to prevent water damage to interior wooden floors, the department says.
“The fire damaged the roof of the building along with gas and electric utilities requiring repair, but most portions of the business are still able to operate at a limited capacity while these repairs are being performed,” said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson in a press release.
Bisson says the flames were out by 10:30 a.m., and people were allowed back in the building to retrieve their belongings.
The fire marshal is still investigating the fire’s cause and origin, but officials say the fire is not considered suspicious.
