Northern Lights Sighting Possible Tonight in CT

When people hear the term northern lights mental pictures of the most stunning images come to mind. However, to most, the image you’re imagining is something you may never see.  The Aurora Borealis which most people from around here know as “northern lights” is quite rare.  If you live up north in portions of northern Maine and Canada you may see them annually, but down here in southern New England is a different story.  That may all change tonight…

A strong solar flare that came off the sun during the day on Monday could cause some harm to the power grids, especially in northern U.S. and Canada.  Satellites and radio transmissions may also be disrupted. (Not expecting those issues here in CT)  The solar flare causes these issues to occur due to the extremely magnetized particles which are associated with it. These solar flares are what cause the aurora borealis.  The reason you see these incredible displays of colors which rage from red, green blue and white is due to the earth protecting itself.

The bright lights as actually collisions between the electrically charged particles from the sun that enter into the earth’s atmosphere, we see them in many forms such as patches, scattered clouds, streamers and arcs.  The earth has a permanent invisible magnetic field surrounding it which protects us from the particles that are launched from the sun.  However, some of these particles do make it through the weaker portions of the magnetic field (North and South Poles) and collide with gas particles in the atmosphere.  These collisions emit lights that we know as the northern lights.  So could we see them tonight?
