First day of spring looks more like winter

NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — You wouldn’t know it by looking outside, but Friday marked the first day of spring. Roads in many areas were snow-covered.

“Everyone’s just going a lot slower than normal,” said motorist Jason Malenfant.

It seems like long ago, but back in January snow was something people joked about. The situation has changed a little since then. Many people say they are tired of winter weather and are disappointed there is more white than green on the ground.

The snow hasn’t been bad new for everyone, though. Kevin D’Mato, who works at North Haven Paint and Hardware, says the winter weather has been good for business.

“We sold lots of rock salt, lots of shovels, roof rakes out the door. People buy them like crazy,” said D’Mato.

Not everyone let the weather get them down. Rita’s in West Haven was ice away for free, Italian ice, as part of their first day of spring celebration.

“It tastes really good because it’s liked mashed up candy,” said Raymond Gilbert of West Haven.

In New England putting up with wintery weather is a way of life, here’s to hoping that changes soon.
