NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–  Church Street, between Chapel Street and Elm Street, has reopened after it was closed this morning due to suspicious packages found in front of the courthouse.

Officials say that around 6:45 a.m., federal marshals and security discovered two packages on the property of the New Haven Federal Courthouse at 141 Church Street.

There was writing on the box that prompted a call to the New Haven Police Department and Bomb Squad unit.

The downtown areas surrounding the courthouse on Church Street were then evacuated. While it was later determined that the packages should be further investigated, nothing hazardous or explosive was inside them.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service  has taken over the investigation.

Church Street was reopened just before 9:30 a.m.
