How to bring Spring into your home

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — This time of year, signs of Spring are everywhere and what better way to welcome in the season than with some simple decor ideas.  For many of us, Spring is a time to clear out the old and bring in the new, but adding some color and greenery into your decor doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive.

Joining us Sunday on Good Morning Connecitcut, Carlotte Smith, the blogger behind Ciburbanity.com, sharing some simple ideas for bringing a hint of spring from the outdoors in.

News 8 anchor Brian Spyros interviewed Smith and discussed the tips listed below. To watch the full interview, just click on the video above.

1. Potted bulbs.  This time of year, it’s still too soon to see many flowers outside, but… there are usually planted bulbs and spring flowers everywhere from the hardware store to the grocery store.  For $4 you can come away with a colorful spring bloom that should last you a couple of weeks with minimal care.  To make these spring pots look more decorative, consider displaying them in an old basket, or an unused piece of china with some moss or grass around the base.
2. Cut flowers. I buy most of my flowers at the grocery store and fancy them up with the right glassware or arrangement.  Daffodils or tulips are often $5 a bunch and when displayed in these colorful thrift store vases, they are the perfect spring accent for any surface in your home.  (Fake flowers will work too… just give them a rinse every so often so they don’t collect dust.)
3. Linens.  Whether it’s table linens, or hand towels in a powder room, bring on the color.  I love to mix and match and find that the simplest little detail like this can really brighten up a room and give a sense that spring is near!
4. Colorful artwork. This is a $3 thrift store frame that I used to display a painted collage with a simple spring quote.  If you don’t feel like painting your own, then just print out something you like from the internet and jot down a few seasonal thoughts!
5. Decor.  Take a look around your home and gather a handful of bright-colored accessories.  When you put a handful of blues and greens together… voila. A lovely spring tablescape.
6. Think spring… what else makes you think of spring? Colors? Smells? Sights?  Green grass always makes me think of spring.  Why not grab some pretty containers, fill them with potting soil and plant some of your own grass!  Never underestimate the power of a lovely scented candle to change the ambiance in your house.  Or maybe a pretty glass container filled with jellybeans is enough!
Bottom line… bringing little bits of spring into your home doesn’t take a team of design experts… have fun with it, look at what you already have, and consider what are your favorite aspects of the season and try to echo these in your home!
