Connecticut furniture store closing after 200 years

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A furniture store that opened in 1808 is closing after more than two centuries as a landmark in Stafford Springs.

Bakers Country Furniture calls itself the oldest furniture store in the country and specializes in country-style furniture and home goods.

Owner John Rossi tells The Hartford Courant, “The fact of the matter is, our world changed somewhere along the line.”

The business has struggled with growing competition from imports.

The owners started a going-out-of business sale on Thursday and Rossi says the store will remain open until the inventory is gone. The property is also up for sale.

A spokesman for the North American Home Furnishings Association says there’s no way to know for sure if Bakers is indeed the oldest furniture store but he doesn’t know of any competing claims.
