Middle schoolers caught buying and using e-ccigarettes

CHESHIRE, Conn. (WTNH) – Officials say students at Dodd Middle School used cash to purchase prepaid credit cards to buy e-cigarettes online.

According to an email from Principal Mike Woods, officials discovered students at the middle school using and selling e-cigarettes on Friday. Most of the students using the devices were eighth-graders.

Woods spoke with the families of students who had used the e-cigarettes and said he provided appropriate supports and consequences for the students involved.

Woods says students got the products from older students, including siblings, and by stealing them from their parents.

He said students used text messages and social media to tell other students where and when to get the e-cigarettes during the school day.

More teens are using e-cigarettes instead of traditional paper and tobacco. According to the 2014 survey by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 8.7 percent of eighth graders had used e-cigarettes in the past month, that’s compared to four percent who had smoked traditional cigarettes.

Under Connecticut law, it is illegal to sell e-cigarettes to a minor. Woods is urging parents to monitor their children’s activity online.
