Baby born on interstate en route to hospital on Easter

NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– There was a special delivery early Easter Sunday morning and it all started right at the exit 9 on ramp in North Haven.

The Yardley family of Cheshire had a surprise when the baby boy they were expecting came a little early on their way to Yale New Haven Hospital. About one o’clock Sunday morning, firefighters from North Haven found them pulled over at the on ramp with the woman in labor.

With no time to waste they quickly put her in the ambulance and tried to drive on. But little Darrin Robert Yardley wouldn’t wait for all that. They pulled over at exit one and had to finish the delivery right there on the interstate.

Firefighters spoke to News 8 earlier Sunday to describe the hectic scenario and how it all went down.

“Amazing. Everything went as smoothly as can be. Running around, remember since we’re in back of the ambulance and it’s moving. Hitting potholes, trying to stay as stable as possible,” said Mike Pomicher, North Haven Fire.

And we’re happy to say that mother and baby are doing well this evening.
