How to green your house while you clean

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Now’s the time we all think about spring cleaning our house. And experts say there’s something new to add to your list.

How about going green while getting clean? Energy efficiency is a year round effort and especially this time of year as the weather warms-up.

We’ve got your back with what you need to do to make your house a little bit more energy efficient. Experts say spring cleaning is a way to lower your utility bills before those air conditioners crank-up. And now that daylight savings time is here, pull back the drapes and take advantage of the longer days to warm-up a room and keep the energy use down.

Here’s another way to save money.

“As you’re cleaning around the house, for instance you pull away the refrigerator from that wall and clean away those dust bunnies, make sure that if your refrigerator has coils, that the coils are clean, clean under the refrigerator as well. It’s all about making sure the appliance runs that much more efficiently,” said Mitch Gross, Eversource.

Tuning-up your HVAC system and replacing the filter will improve air quality. Another good tip is to use power strips to connect your computer, TV, and DVD player. It’s easier to turn electronics on or off when not in use.

Experts say if your appliance is more efficient, it will use less power. And, you’ll have a little bit more green in your pocket.
