The U.S. Postal Service debuted a new limited edition “Forever” stamp Tuesday honoring Maya Angelou, but the featured quote apparently is from a Connecticut children’s author, Joan Walsh Anglund.
The late poet, author and civil rights champion Angelou is known for her many quotes, but what reads on the stamp: “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song” is written in a book of poems called “A Cup of Sun” by Joan Walsh Anglund. The 89 year old author, who calls Connecticut home, told The Washington Post the quotation is hers and she didn’t know about the stamp but hopes it’s successful.
Postal Service spokesman David Partenheimer said Tuesday the quotation was included because it’s something Angelou referenced frequently and it provides a connection to her first memoir “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”
The Postal Service hasn’t said whether it will reissue the stamp with a different quote.
