Cars Heat Up QUICK!

But why is this so dangerous?

  • Car’s windows act like a greenhouse, trapping the sun’s radiation and heating up the vehicle. On average 25 children a year die as a result of being left inside a hot car
  • When the temperature outside is between 80-100 F and a car is parked in direct sunlight, the inside temperature will jump to 131-172 F in a short period of time
  • Even if it’s in the 60’s outside a car will rise to 110+ F
  • If the outside temperature is 83 F, with the windows rolled down 2 inches, the temperature inside the car will reach 110 within 15 minutes
  • It takes just 10 minutes on a hot day for the inside of the car to reach temperatures that are life-threatening
  • On average a car’s temperature will rise 82 % of its eventual one hour rise within the first 10 minutes
  • Heatstroke occurs when the body temperature reaches 104 F
  • Sweating mechanism can fail, making your body unable to cool down
  • Body temperature will rise to 106 within 10-15 minutes
  • Body temperature of 107 is lethal

I took a black car with black leather interior, drove it around with the AC on.  When we shut the car off at 2:15 PM.  The temperature was 72 F.  We then took a reading every 5 minutes.  Here are our results…
 Cars Heat Up QUICK!

Time                Temperature

2:15 PM                      72 F

2:20 PM                      94 F

2:25 PM                      107.4 F

2:30 PM                      113.1 F

2:40 PM                      116.9 F

2:45 PM                      118.8 F

2:50 PM                      120.1 F

These temperature readings were from inside the car.  In just 10 minutes the temperature inside the car increased by 35.4 F.Outside Temperature: 83 F
