If you’re thinking we went from Winter to Summer, you’re pretty much right.
The amount of days the max temp was “spring like” is one of the least amounts on record.
For the period of March 1 to May 11 Bridgeport only had 36 days where the max temp was 45-65°F. That means all the other days were below 45 or above 65. It’s the 2nd least on record.
Windsor Locks only 29 days! So a month worth of Spring. Normal Max is low 40s starting March and mid 60s ending April. So what the heck happened to those temps?
It started with the polar Jet Stream retreating north…then the upper level lows were happening in the southwest which in turn pumped the ridge in the East. So we got a south flow instead of a northwest flow. 850 mb level surged to very warm levels (+11-18C). Surface Temps surged into June & July levels. Luckily for the coast we had back door cold fronts and water temps that weren’t warm yet, but the interior got torched!
Winter ended late and Summer started early. (Top 5 Warmest 1st half of May on record for many spots in the Northeast). Not to forget no precip lately.
One more comparison of the Merritt Parkway. May 4th and this morning. It’s the fastest bare/bud to leaf out I can remember. It usually happens fast but not this fast. That’s what happens when you get 70s & 80s after winter ends late I guess.
So I’ll ask again.. what happened to Spring. Meteorological Spring is March, April & May. We haven’t finished May yet but we’ve been in Summer pattern for 2 weeks now. We finally get a break after today (to only seasonable levels) but it looks like the heat might be returning again starting Sunday into next week before another break again..
