New Haven cracking down on E-Cigarettes

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–The City of New Haven is cracking down on e-cigarettes.

Last night, the Board of Alders voted to ban e-cigarette smokers from lighting up or ”vaping” in certain areas around the city.

Alderman Adam Marchand says the main purpose it to eliminate the exposure of second hand smoke to children.

Marchand explains, “Portions of parks. Within the parks we’re talking about playgrounds and ballparks. So, if you’re in Edgewood Park and you’re walking on the trail, it would not be illegal to smoke. It includes a ban in Lighthouse Point Park altogether, and also school grounds.

The ordinance will establish smoking zones within public places like the beach at Lighthouse Point Park. It will also ban the use of e-cigarettes on government property where there’s already a state law that bans tobacco.

There will be a 90 day grace period, so during that time you will be cited if caught. After that, you could be fined 100 dollars.
